Know Before You Sign

Make sure your coverage matches the contract

Brokers, shippers, and federal authority all set requirements, and any of them can hold a load if the coverage behind it does not match.

Financial responsibility filings

Interstate authority requires filings at set limits, and the filing has to follow the policy every time coverage changes

Cargo limits and additional insured status

Shippers and brokers set cargo limits and certificate wording, and those requirements vary from one contract to the next

Driver qualification and scheduling

Who is on the policy, and how quickly new drivers get added, determines whether a load is covered the day it moves

Need a certificate for a load or a broker? Call 315-598-6000 with the shipper details and required wording.

Understanding Your Premium

What actually moves your insurance cost

Fleet premiums are built from where you run and who drives. The more accurately those details are represented, the easier it is to make sure you are paying for the right risk.

Radius of operation

Local, intermediate, and long haul are three different rating worlds.

Records and experience

MVRs, CDL tenure, and turnover carry more weight than fleet size does.

Claims and safety scores

Loss history and federal scoring follow the authority, not the policy.

Commodity hauled

What is on the trailer changes both the liability and the cargo rate.

Equipment age and values

Newer equipment costs more to repair and less to keep running.

Authority and limits

The limits your filings and contracts require set the floor for the program.

Before You Shop Carriers

A better premium often starts with better information.

We review driver lists, radius, commodity descriptions, unit schedules, and filing requirements before assuming the answer is simply another carrier.

Good To Know

Transportation insurance FAQs

Quick answers to common questions from New York fleets and carriers.
At minimum: commercial auto liability at the limits your authority and contracts require, motor truck cargo, physical damage on owned equipment, and workers’ compensation and DBL. Most fleets add general liability and the umbrella limits broker agreements ask for.
No. Auto liability and physical damage cover the truck. Cargo on the trailer needs motor truck cargo coverage written to the limit your shippers require.
More than almost anything else. Carriers rate on MVRs, CDL experience, and turnover, and a driver list that has not been reviewed since the last renewal is a common source of surprise at quoting.
They should carry it, and you should hold a current certificate for every one. How they are contracted determines what falls back on your policy at audit.
